Morland was a prolific painter of landscape and genre, with a speciality for rustic scenes. His father and grandfather were artists before him. He led a fairly dissolute life, constantly changing address to avoid debt, so that despite his output he was never wealthy. The end of his life was hastened by his taste for drink. Much of his work is familiar through later engravings, and he was an influence on the caricaturist Gillray and the landscapist Constable. He was buried alongside his wife, who survived him by a mere four days.
