The Civil War headstone is for Werter R. Davis, who was the first president of Baker University. The military headstone was applied for in 1926, about 33 years after the death of Dr. Davis. The person who applied for the headstone (a Russell) entered his name as Webster R. Davis on the application, rather than Werter R. Davis, a Col. in the 16th Kansas Cavalry. He was also a chaplain.
