Attorney at law and secretary of the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon, & Delaware railraod Co., third child of Henry & Avice (Towne) Davis, graduated Kenyon college 1835. Pay Master US Vols, twice elected probate Judge of Knox Co. last term expiring in 1861, Mayor of Mt. Vernon 1849-51 and again 1866-1871. He was the first editor of the True Whig. In 1850 he was appointed deputy United States Marshal and took the Federal Census of Knox Co. In the Winter of 1864/65 he was appointed by President Lincoln paymaster in the US Army in Washington. Joseph married Sarah B. Moore and had 4 children, 2 sons, 2 dau.: Captain Henry M. Davis, Anna C.(married John W. Hall), Mary A., and Rorlin H.
