Amelia was one of the many children of Stephen Cooper Dendy and Miriamne Dubbins of Horsham, West Sussex, England. She married Edward Howard Howard-Gibbon, and was the mother of their own six children.
After Edward died in 1849, Amelia lived with several of her children in Sussex. Sometime between 1855 and 1859, she decided to immigrate to Ontario, Canada, and her sons helped build her home at Etobicoke (near Toronto), where she lived out her final years.
Two of her six children never moved to Ontario and remained in England. Oldest son Edward became an Anglican priest, and was married but had no children. Youngest daughter Mary Eliza was a resident housekeeper for a married couple with children, and died unmarried while relatively young. The other four Howard-Gibbon children (Amelia Frances, Caroline, Henry Frederick, and Charles) all moved to Ontario as young adults, with the latter three marrying in Ontario and raising their children there.
