Jazz Musician. Born in Inglewood, California, he was a jazz saxophonist dubbed "Zoot" for his exuberance, mellow tone and sense of groove for swing music. Throughout his career he played in the renowned bands of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, Count Basie and Buddy Rich. In the 1950s and '60s, he had a successful partnership as co-leader of a quintet with Al Cohn, which toured and recorded under the name "Al and Zoot". He died in New York on March 23, 1985.
