Prominent Utility Man Died Today

Carroll Collins Sr. Passed Away This Morning At Oaklawn Hospital.

--Carroll Collins Sr., 83, for many years one of the best known utility men in the midwest and south, passed away at 10:30 o'clock this morning at Oaklawn hospital.
--Mr. Collins had been seriously ill for several months and in failing health for over a year. Former owner of the Marshall Gas Light Co. he resided her with his family from 1906 until 1921 in which latter year he retired from business and went to San Antonio, Tex., to reside.
--It was while in San Antonio that he was taken ill and several weeks ago his son, Garrett of this city, went to San Antonio and brought him to Marshall where he immediately entered Oaklawn hospital.
--Mr. Collins was born, Sept. 3, 1851, in Scottsville, Pa., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Collins. The family moved to Peoria, Ill., when he was a boy.
--While he was a young man, he was appointed assistant manager of Station A, of the Detroit City Gas Co., where he remained five years, where going from there to Cario, Ill., where he operated and managed the gas plant for the famous Halliday family, which owned most of the steamboats and barges on the Mississippi River. He then purchased the gas plant at Murfreesboro, Tenn., and while there built the municipal water plant. It was in Murfreesboro that he married Mrs. Elizabeth Garrett Collins on Nov. 12, 1884, who passed in Marshall in 1920.
--Mr. Collins purchased the electric power plant and gas plant at Green Bay, Wis., where the three sons, Edward H. who passed away Dec. 10, last, Garrett and Carroll Jr. were born. He continued to retain his interest in the Murfreesboro plant.
--From Green Bay he went to Elkhart, Ind., where he purchased the electric lighting but was there a comparatively short time when he went to Austin, Tex., as manager of the gas company for Pontiac, Mich. interests. After leaving Austin he purchased a Zinc mine in Joplin, Mo., which he operated until 1906 when he purchased the Marshall gas plant and operated it until 1921 when he sold to Michigan Federated Utilities and retired, going to San Antonio where he lived most of the time coming north during the summer for short visits.
--Surviving are two sons, Garrett of Marshall and Carroll Jr. of Los Angeles. The latter, who came here for the burial of his brother Edward, is still in Marshall and will remain until after the funeral and burial of his father.
--The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock at the Kelser & More funeral home. Rev. James A. Horton of Trinity Episcopal church will officiate and interment will be at Oakridge cemetery.
