Nelson "Bert" Bertrand was born 29 September 1931 in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana to Nelson and Winifred (Treloar) Bertrand. When Bert was 6 years old, the family moved to Portland where he was raised and educated, graduating from Milwaukie High School. Bert enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged on March 1, 1963.

On Sept. 19, 1981, he married Armelda Nuss at his sister's home in Milwaukie.

He worked as a lather for various companies. He was a business agent for the lathers and plasterers union, retiring in 1993.

A service with military honors will be held at noon Wednesday, June 29, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Bert volunteered for a number of years at Toy & Joy Makers and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed watching bowling, soccer, hockey, football, poker, boxing and Ultimate Fighting Championship on television. He liked working on his house and keeping up his yard. Bert always had something funny to say and often caught people off guard with his unique sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Bertrand, in May 2011; and by two sisters.

Survivors include his wife; daughter; Meda Brown of Honolulu, Hawaii; son, Donald Bertrand of Portland; stepsons, Robert Hergenrader of Canby, Daniel Hergenrader of Portland and Scott Updike of Portland; stepdaughter, Cynthia Hergenrader of Tigard; sisters, Lenore Wright of Oregon City and Gloria Calwhite of Milwaukie; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A service with military honors will be at noon Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Willamette National Cemetery.
