Professional Baseball Player. A righthanded pitcher and outfielder for eight seasons in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), she is considered one of the circuit's all-time greats. Raised in Detroit, she was a top level girls' softball player while in her teens and after signing with the AAGPBL was assigned to the Milwaukee Chicks in 1944. Connie had 23 wins against 10 losses with a 2.23 E.R.A. helping an outstanding Chicks team capture the league crown, but despite their on the field success a lack of fan support and financial backing forced the squad to move to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1945. That year Connie went 32-11 with a 0.81 E.R.A. and earned Player of the Year Honors then 1946 saw her receive the first of her four All-Star selections while posting a 32-9 record and a 0.96 E.R.A. When the AAGPBL forced the girls to pitch sidearm in 1947 Connie's record suffered, falling to 16-14 though she was still able to lead the Chicks to the league championship. In 1948 overhand pitching was mandated ending Connie's time on the mound but a switch to the outfield saw her lead the league in home runs and come in second in hitting with a .289 average. Retiring after the 1952 campaign, Connie had final pitching totals of 107 wins versus 48 losses, giving her an all time league best winning percentage of .690, while her .290 batting average also ranks her among the top performers. Connie spent her later years in Florida and was part of the 1988 mass induction of the AAGPBL and its players into Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame. She died of gastric cancer. The league's story is told in the 1992 movie "A League of Their Own".
