Actor, Film Director. He was best known for playing the character roles of doctors, journalists, inspectors, professors, aides, captains, and even the famous murderer Nicolo Vacco. He was best known for playing the role of 'Meyer's Aide' in the epic historical action film drama, "The Longest Day" (1962). The film which was directed by Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, and Gerd Oswald, which was written for the screen by Cornelius Ryan, Romain Gary, and James Jones, and which also starred John Wayne, Robert Ryan, Richard Burton, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Robert Wagner, Stuart Whitman, and George Segal, tells the story about the events of D-Day, which is told on a grand scale from both the Allied and German points of view. He is also best remembered for playing the role of 'Ferdinand Blumauer' in twelve episodes of the popular German television series, "Donauprinzessin," in 1992., which was directed by Michael Gunter, which was written by Barbara Piazza, and which also starred Gaby Dohm, Brigitte Karner, Marianne Schönauer, Siemen Rühaak. He was born as Robert Peter Freytag in Vienna, Austria, of Austrian-Swiss heritage to the famed Opera singer Otto Freytag. He trained as an actor at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, Austria, and during the beginning of World War II and the Nazis' rise to power he went to Zurich, Switzerland, where he continued his acting at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. He also participated in the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg, Austria, and at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the Hamburger Kammerspiele, both in Hamburg, Germany. He also founded the Zürcher Schauspieltruppe in Zürich, Switzerland, where he was also a part-time administrator. The troupe performed throughout the German-speaking countries and in the United States. During this time he also made the transition to film and eventually television. He was married twice, first to actress Maria Becker (1920-2012), with whom he had three children, actor Oliver Tobias, actor Benedict Freitag, and his third son Christopher Freitag committed suicide at the age of 20, and secondly to actress Maria Sebald (1930-), from 1966 until his death. She survives him at the age of 92. He was also the grandfather of the first three children of his son Benedict Freitag and the pop singer Nena who had a hit recording with the song, "99 Luftballons," in 1984. His autobiography, "Es wollt mir behagen, mit Lachen die Wahrheit zu sagen," was published in 1994.
