Howard attended Battle Creek High School. His father died when he was 14 years old while he was in high school After he graduated from high school, he and his widowed mother moved to Detroit to live with his sister Olive Madge Riley Coleman and her family. He started working for the car company called Huppmobile, and soon joined Chrysler. He was with Chrysler his entire career, worked for it for over 40 years. His hobbies were: inventing and designing things (always practical) for things around the home, photography (including developing photography in his photo lab in his basement, setting up and running slideshows, and submitting his works at photo competitions), traveling, bowling, golfing, and spending time with his family. After he retired, he bought a "land yacht", a 30 foot long Airstream trailer. He and his wife traveled all over the country, especially out west and Canada.
He met his future wife Mildred Marion Sieder at Jefferson Presbyterian Church. He married her on 25 Apr 1930 and was married for 56 years before he passed away. They had three children, one of them now deceased. He had 11 grandchildren, 2 were deceased.
He died in his home, living his life to the fullest to the every end. He played golf the day and shopped some for food before he passed away.
He is fondly remembered for his dry wit.
