Cipriana "Zippie" Gonzales, the second child of Nemecio Gonzales and Florencia Enriquez was born in Firebaugh, Fresno County, CA where her father was a sheep shearer. Cipriana's mother had been married previously to Manuel Castro Estrada. Cipriana had 7 half siblings:
Andrea Estrada Hallahan, Roberto Estrada, Faustina Estrada Sanchez, Salestino Estrada, Cipriano Estrada, Kintina Estrada, and Senovio Estrada.

Cipriana married Elario Castro in Oct 1910 and they had one son, Patricio Castro before Elario died of TB in Apr 1912. A marriage record was found for Cipriana and Allen F Strunk in the Fresno County Records for 14 Oct 1917. Nothing more is known of that marriage. Cipriana went on to marry Arthur Owen Roberts, having another son, Thomas Owen Roberts. On his birth certificate she is identified as Agnes Gonzales.

While living in San Francisco, working as a telephone operator for P.T.& T., Zippie was called back in to work the day President Warren G. Harding suddenly collapsed and died. That was 02 Aug 1923. Zippie was one of the few to be considered an "overseas" operator because she was fluent in English, Spanish, and French.

When her mother became ill Zippie moved back to Fresno. It was at a local dance in Firebaugh that she met the handsome Vince Ruiz, a widower with one son. In March 1927 Zippie married Vincent Cecil Ruiz. Their daughter Dolores was born in May a year later. Zippie and Vincent lived almost their entire married life in Madera, Madera County CA in the house at the corner of 6th and O Streets. Vincent's family had owned the property since 1900.

At just 4'10" Zippie might have been considered small but she had a HUGE heart, as her enormous extended family in Firebaugh and surrounding areas knew. They were always welcome in her home and at her dinner table. She was truly loved, not only by that part of her family, but by her grandchildren who knew her as "Nana", always ready with a hug, a kiss, and often a warm tortilla! Her enchiladas were legendary!
