Shannon Rites Held Sunday in Carver School
The Carver school gymnasium-auditorium was crowded Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock as citizens of that community thronged to pay their last respects to Mrs. Sophronia Williams Shannon, wife of Riley Shannon. The services originally were announced to be held in the Mt. Pilgrem Baptist church but a change in plans was made in order that seating arrangements might be secure for a greater number of friends.
According to the custom of the community, a program was arranged for the services beginning with a processional, followed by congregational singing. The scripture was read by the Rev. J. G. Reed, pastor of the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist church, after which a prayer was made by Elder C. C. Cunningham.
Following a vocal solo by Mrs. M. K. Jones, an acknowledgement of the receipt of flowers, cards and telegrams was made by Mrs. C. Perry. The reading of resolutions preceded the reading of the obituary by Mrs. Kathleen Gibson.
The funeral sermon was preached by Elder P. H. Morgan of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Tulsa with a recessional concluding the services. Mrs. A. H. Hudson, wife of the principal of the Carver school and herself an instructor of music and social science in the same school, served as pianist throughout the program.
Honorary pallbearers were Mrs. A. C. Dixon, Mrs. Mabel Underwood, Mrs. Sarah Robbins, Mrs Elnora Rose, Mrs. Delila Richardson and Mrs. C. H. Roach. Active pallbearers were the Carver principal, Hudson and Verby Rose, John Parrish, John Crawford, E. L. Jones, who is one of the instructors at Carver school, and T. Johnson.
Flower girls were Mrs Ruby Johnson, Mrs Mary Hoyle, Mrs. Mabel Hudson, Mrs. Frank White, Mrs. Mayme Crawford and Mrs. Jesse Dixon. Ushers were Joe Donald White, Alice Crawford, Melvin Crawford and Glorus Hoyle.
Mrs. Shannon died last Monday following a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage suffered the preceding Thursday. She was bron in Rosebud, Tex., 63 years ago but had been a resident of Oklahoma ever since statehood. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Williams, who lived in Hominy many years before their death. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon have been long-time respected memeber in the community. She had been employed as housekeeper for the E. C. Mullendore home in Cleveland for many years.
She is survived by the husband of Hominy and by three sons, Richard Steele, San Francisco, Calif., Robert Steele, San Diego, Calif., and Solomon Steele, El Reno, [Okla.,] and by an adopted daughter, Mrs. Helen Bean, Los Angeles, Calif., and one granddaughter.

Sophronia worked as a housekeeper for E. C. Mullendore and Sarah Jane "Jennie" (Berry) Mullendore for thirty-five years.

The 1940 census (in which she is listed as "Sophenia Shamson") appears to show that she lived alone in a house near the Mullendore Mansion of Cleveland OK, which is where her employer, Jennie Mullendore, lived.

The 1940 census also shows that Sophronia's husband, Riley Shannon, and daughter, Helen, lived in Hominy, OK. Presumably, she lived apart from her family so that she could be closer to work.

One of Jennie Mullendore's grandsons, Dale Archer McNulty "remembers fondly cooking biscuits with Sophronia when he was 7 or 8; churning butter in her kitchen. She was a 7th Day Adventist who took Thursdays to go to church." (Source: email from Dale McNulty's wife, Marietta)

"Mildred [Mullendore; Jennie's daughter] remembers their colored maid, Sophronia, who was like one of the family for thirty-five years. She lived across the street and later in an upstairs bedroom in the house. She helped with the cooking and cleaning as did Mildred and [her sister] Bessie. Sophronia stayed until Jennie died."
