James Campbell was born in Butler Township, Knox County, Ohio, March 14, 1818. His parents David and Mariah (Vance) Campbell, of Scotch descent , were natives of Virginia and came to Ohio in 1817. James married Eliza A. Sperry, January 30, 1844 and to them seven children were born. James was received into the Owl Creek Baptist church January 10, 1852, elected clerk of that church February 7, 1852, serving till February 11, 1855, when he was chosen Deacon, in which office he remained until his death. Both in the church and the community he rendered valuable service to his God, and his fellow men. Being possessed of considerable executive ability, forethought, and soundness of judgment, his advice was frequently sought, and freely given. He became of outstanding importance in his community. He was highly revered by his seven children and many grandchildren. He died March 21, 1894 and was buried in the Owl Creek church cemetery.
