He enjoyed a lifelong career on stage and in film, beginning in Holland where he was born, then in Austria, and then in Germany before and during World War II, as well as in Switzerland and France. After World War II he became an Austrian citizen, and he made only one film in Hollywood; he eventually returned to settle in Germany, where he remained until the death of his first wife. They had two daughters, both of whom became performers (daughter Nicole enjoyed a career as an actress in Europe). He later remarried but had no more children. He appeared at the Lido in Paris in 1978, at the age of 75, and performed as an entertainer until two months before his death at 108 years of age.
