Hazel Crest IL - English, Almena Beatrice (nee Forbes) Mrs. English of Olympia Fields transitioned to everlasting life on February 20th, 2012. She was born in Mound City, IL on December 26, 1926.
She graduated from Lovejoy High School in Mound City and from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. Later as an employee of Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, AL, she met and married her husband of 59 years, William "Bill" English.
Almena and Bill moved to Chicago in the early 1950's where Almena began working for the Chicago Board of Education as an elementary school teacher. She retired from Gladstone Elementary School after 35 years. Almena loved Lilydale Missionary Baptist Church, her family and friends, but her passion was working with the scouting program at her church.
She was a scout leader for over 50 years and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America for meritorious service. Almena was also an avid bridge player and swimmer.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, William, Jr. (Bill); sons, William III (Valerie), Marvin, (Faye) Rochelle; one brother, James (Elvena) Forbes; three sisters, Wilma Josephine McKinney, Shirley (Robert) Johnson and Sylvia Long; one sister-in-law, Jessie Forbes; five grandsons, William IV, Lloyd, Delmar, Marvin Jr., and Tony along with a host of other relatives and great friends.
Wake and funeral will be at Lilydale Missionary Baptist Church, 10706 S. Michigan at 10 and ll A.M. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
