A Pioneer Gone
Samuel Marshal an Old Resident of Jefferson Township.

At the home of Newton Pinkerton, in Jefferson Township Sunday night, occurred the death of Samuel Marshall, one of the real pioneers of this county. He was nearly eighty-six years old and had lived in Jefferson Township over sixty years. He was well and most favorably known throughout the county. The funeral was held today at Purviance Chapel and internment was made in the Purviance Cemetery.

Below is a sketch of his life:

Samuel Marshall was born in Franklin county, Ohio, February 1, 1812. He spent his boyhood and youth on farm, and received a fair education for the day of log school houses. At his majority he began doing for himself, engaging principally in carpenter work. At the age of twenty-four, or in the Spring of 1836, our subject found that his earnings amounted to $200 and he resolved to go west. Accordingly about the first of April 1836 he started on foot to seek a home. About the middle of the month he arrived at Joseph Anthony's who resided in what was then known as Charlestown.

Mr. Anthony showed him a tract of land in Jefferson Township, this township, this county, and he immediately started to Fort Wayne to enter 160 acres in sections 9 and 10. This was then a wild woodland filled with game and an occasional Indian. There were no highways and pioneers cabins were scarce. He began working at his trade here and there within a radius of fifty miles of what is his home today, but occasionally he spent some time in clearing up his farm. On April 5, 1855, he was married to Mary C Shull, daughter of John and Lydia Shull, old and respected citizens of the township. This union was blessed with nine children: Thomas C., John S., James H., Laura B., Lydia C., Margaret E., Elmeda J., Mary A., and Samuel G., of whom Thomas C., Lydia C., and Samuel G., are deceased and interred in the Purviance Cemetery.

Mrs. Marshal died September 24, 1874. She was a Christian woman and esteemed by all who knew her.

Mr. Marshall was a member of the Christian church with which he had been identified for a number of years. Politically, he was a staunch republican, and held the office of township trustee.

"He was the second in a family of ten children, born to Thomas and Margaret Marshell, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania, and of English descent. They were married in Licking County, Ohio, about 1810, and the former continued to reside in Ohio until his death, which occurred in 1844. The later was called away in Huntington County, while residing with her son, our subject, in 1879."∼Not to be confused with Shawna T. Marshall's Samuel G. Marshall born in 1817 in Kentucky and died in1889 before my Samuel in 1898. She also has the siblings of her Samuel mixed up with who belongs to my Great grandmother ELNORA FRANCIS (ies ) MARSHALL-WARD-REDNER . ELNORA DID MARRY A SAMUEL G. MARSHALL ON APRIL 13, 1875 from which Shawna has taken from my research and used it to link her SAMUEL WITHOUT PERMISSION. ELNORA HAD ONLY THREE CHILDREN BY MY SAMUEL G. MARSHALL. A SON THEODORE PEARL MARSHALL AND 2 DAUGHTERS MARTHA ANN MARSHALL-GARDNER,AND MAY ETTA (ETTA MAY)MARSHALL-PETERSEN . HER OTHER TWO DAUGHTERS WERE BY ELI WARD AND NAMED MINNIE ALICE WARD-VREELAND AND MAUDE WARD- MARSHALL-BREESE-BATZEL. SEE HER OBIT NAMING HER CHILDREN. ALL OTHER CHILDREN BY SAMUEL OF 1817 KENTUCKY WERE FROM HIS FIRST MARRIAGE. ANY OTHER INFO SHE HAS POSTED DOES NOT RELATE TO SAMUEL G. MARSHALL BORN FEB 1, 1812 AND PASSED JAN 23, 1898. SHAWNA HAS REFUSED TO CORRECT HER INFORMATION OR ASKED PERMISSION TO USE OUR FAMILY'S RESEARCH INFO AND HAD SOMEHOW HAD MY ORIGINAL MEMORIAL DELEATED. SO I AM AGAIN GOING TO CREATE A NEW MEMORIAL PAGE FOR MY GREAT GRANDFATHER.

Samuel Marshall (1812-1898) and Mary Catharine Shull Marshall (1835-1874) do not appear to be the parents of May Etta Marshall. Mary Catharine Shull Marshall died in 1874 which was three years before May Etta Marshall was born in 1877. There is no record of Samuel Marshall (1812-1898) having married a second time. Samuel Marshall was approximately 62 years old when his wife died.
