Austrian stage and film actor, author, singer and film and theater director. Thimig appeared in more than 50 films during his career, beginning in the silent era and ending in 1976. He was closely associated with the Theater in der Josephstadt in Vienna, where both acted and directed, and in 1943 he defiantly organized a tribute there to Austrian-Jewish playwright and director (and husband of Thimig's sister) Max Reinhardt, who had died while in exile in the United States--while Austria was under Nazi rule. He performed in radio drama productions as well. One of his best known theatrical productions was for an adaptation of Blazac's Mercadet, which he took on tour in the late 1930s.
