NICHOLAS DANKO, JR.
GARY, IN

Nicholas Danko, Jr., age 83, of Gary, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 17, 2012 in Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton, MD. Nicholas was born December 1, 1928, in Gary, IN to Nicholas Sr. and Pearl Danko.
Nicholas was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and earned a purple heart for wounds incurred at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War and will receive full honors and colors. He was a member of Merrillville American Legion Post 289. He will be laid to rest next to his parents Nicholas Danko Sr. and Pearl Danko.
His greatest accomplishments where being a U.S. Marine and defending the freedom of our country and raising his five children, with his wife, Retha Eileen Danko who passed away June 23, 2007.
All of his children proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps as well. He also served the Lord faithfully at St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church in Gary, IN.
Nicholas is survived by five children: Nicholas Danko III of Raleigh, NC, Michael Danko of Leonardtown, MD, Miriam Stocks of Fredericksburg, VA, Matthew (Mary) Danko of Manteca, CA, and Elizabeth (Steve) Tuttle of Niceville, FL; 11 grandchildren: Laura (Jason) Buttram, Brandon Danko, Anthony Patrick Tuttle, Anthony Michael Tuttle, Kristen Stocks, Danielle (Kelvin) Morrison, Michael P. Danko, Erika Tuttle, Cassidy Danko, and Shea Danko; four great grandchildren: Jayden Morrison, Noah Buttram, Savannah Buttram, and soon to arrive, Emma Buttram; sister, Kathryn Zaborski of Colorado Springs, CO and her two children: Allison Wilson and Ronald Zaborski; and grandchild, Nathan Wilson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 22, 2012 at 10;00 a.m. DIRECTLY at Protection of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, 8600 Grand Blvd., Merrillville with Rev. Peter Bodnar officiating. Interment at St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Cemetery in Gary. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Memorial service Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Nicholas will lie in-state at the church on Friday from 9:30-10:00 a.m.
