A farmer and a lay minister in the Church of God, Joseph Walter was one of 16 children born to Christian Walter (1781-1857) and Maria Margaretha Keister Walter (1786-1862). He married Sarah Nixon (1821-1888) on March 8, 1838 in Wayne County, OH. Joseph and his younger brother Daniel (1829-1910) settled in DeKalb County, IN. Upon their father's death in 1857, they each inherited $200 plus interest accrued from their 21st birthdays. Joseph and Sarah owned a considerable amount of land in Jackson Township and dedicated a portion for the construction of the Grove Bethel Church which no longer exists. A stained-glass window in the former Church of God (now Church of Christ) at Tenth and Jackson Streets in Auburn, IN, is dedicated to their memory. They had 14 children, one of whom, Hattie (1858-1878), is buried with them. As a minister, Joseph performed marriages, signing the certificates as "Joseph Walter, minister." The inscription on his headstone reads:

"Though he sleeps his memory doth live
and cheering comfort to his mourners
give.
He followed virtue as his truest guide
Lived as a christian as a christian died."
