Winthrop Myers Allen, 70, a Louisville civic leader and retired businessman died at 5:32 p.m. yesterday in the Norton memorial Infirmary. He lived at 3721 Fairway lane. Allen, a Pittsburgh native, was director of research for the Mengel division of the Container Corporation of America before retiring in 1958. He joined the company in 1919. he was a member of the University of Louisville board of overseers and the Bernheim Forest board and a director of the Historic Homes Foundation. He also was a member of the Wynn-Stay Club and the Louisville Country Club. Allen served on the City Smoke commission, predecessor of the City County Air Pollution Control Commission from 1945 to 1951 and was chairman of the group for a time. he was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and was an Army captain in World War I. Surviving are his wife, the former Louisa Starks, a daughter, Mrs. John Stites, Jr., a stepdaughter, Mrs. Sevier Bonnie Jr. Clevelnad and seven grandchildren. The body will be cremated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the heart Fund.
