He emigrated at age 48 to the USA with his wife, Friederike , and their children in 1855 aboard the sailing ship Herschel, which departed from Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York City on July 27 of that year. On the manifest his occupation was recorded as "shepherd." They were the parents of nine children who were: Louise, Wilhelmine, Frederick who died in the civil war, Wilhelm, Ernestine, Augusta, Ernst and Karl, all born in Brandenburg, Germany; and finally Anna who was born in Sheboygan County.
He was a dairy farmer in the Town of Lyndon, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, near what is today Howards Grove.
He passed away on July 19, 1886.
