Death of Jno. McKinney.

John McKinney was born in Lancaster, Penn., about 1828. His father having a short time before this date, emigrated from Ireland. His father's most devout piety and Presbyterism entailed on his son such a high standard of honor and honesty that the character of John McKinney was an embodiment of these virtues. In 1838 his father moved to Madison, and thence to a farm near Wirt,Ind. In 1845 John McKinney came to Madison as clerk in Gallepies' hardware store, after the destruction of this store by fire in March 1845, it being under the old First Presbyterian church, he entered the hardware store of W. Wells & Bro., with whom he continued several years as a hardware drummer, in times when Madison drummers had the whole State for their field. In 1857 he and Chas. Alling bought out E. G. Leonard, and founded the hardware firm of McKinney & Alling, still existing as Alling & Lodge. In 1866 he succeeded W. Wells & Son, his firm being Jno. McKinney & Co. After this he was active in organizing and carrying on the Neal Manufacturing Co. When this organization wound up he went to Indianapolis with Hon. R. J. Bright, his life long friend, brought the Indianapolis Sentinel. Here he formed an intimate acquaintance with leading men of both parties throughout the State and few men had so many warm friends, especially among the Democratic party of which he was always an ardent admirer. After a time he engaged in the manufacture of tiling and pipes in Indianapolis with Capt. Collins and others. After filling well the office of Assistant Seargent at Arms at Washington, he returned to Indianapolis and conducted a hardware store, but his health which had always been very delicate, prevented further active business and he died April 24th, 1887, leaving many friends to mourn his loss. He was married in 1856 to Miss Julia Bachman, who with four children survive him. The funeral will take place in Madison to-morrow afternoon. The remains will arrive to-morrow noon. The following old friends will act as pall-bearers: Wm. B. Swormstedt, G. K. Lodge, Chas. Alling, H. C. Sanxay, I. N. Todd, Wm. Dering. The remains will be interred at Springdale Cemetery immediately on the arrival of the noon train, going directly to the cemetery. Friends will please attend without further notice.
