Painter. He received much acclaim during the early 19th century as the German painter who captured in oil on 83 canvases the battles of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's Army on the Russian campaign in 1812. He was a civilian attached to the topographical staff of Prince Eugene de Beauharnais, an adopted stepson of Napoleon and commander of IV Corps.Leaving a career as a baker, he entered an artistic career with the encouragement of Johann Rugendas, the Director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. In 1897 he relocated to Munich to study and copy the paintings of the old masters. After his military training during the Austrian Campaign in 1809, he stayed in Austria. While studying art in Milan, Italy in 1811, he married his wife. Napoleon's war ended in April of 1814. In 1815 he relocated to Munich where he built a home and studio, which was often visited by noblemen and artists. His studio was large enough for a horse to enter and be his model. He was commissioned to paint portraits of many aristocratic figures in Bavaria and Austria, including the many portraits of Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I. Also, he did engravings and drawings. From 1829 to 1830, he was in Stuttgart where he was commissioned by King Wilhelm I of Wurttemberg to paint several portraits of him with his Arabian horses. Many of his paintings are in private collections but several are on public view at Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover, the Bavarian State Painting Collection based in Munich, and The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. The 1815 painting, “General von Bellegarde” sold at Sotheby's Auction House in London, England in November of 1989 to a private collector for an undisclosed price. As an elderly man, he continued to work with the support of his four sons. Starting with his father, there were four generations of artists in this family known for their beautiful paintings of horses. There have been several books written in different languages about Adam's paintings including Jonathan North's 2005 “Napoleon's Army in Russia: The Illustrated Memoirs of Albrecht Adam, 1812.”
