Painter. He will be remembered as a German painter of the 19th century, excelling in military paintings. Born the second son of celebrated German painter Albrecht Adam, he studied under his father and was his close assistant. Although he was born in Italy, he spent only months there before his father returned to Germany with his family. Like his father, he had a talent in painting battle scenes with soldiers on horseback, yet he produced equestrian portraits as well as horses in pastures on Bavarian farms. He documented scenes in the First Italian War for Independence in 1848, and his first masterpiece was a scene from the Battle of Solferino during the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859. His most-noted works were during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 and later on the battle fields of Hungary. Along with mentoring, he opened career doors for several young artists including Polish painter Jozef Brandt. Adam's work is still popular receiving, according the size and medium of the artwork, from $235 to thousands of dollars a painting. In 2004 his oil-on canvas “The Cavalry Camp” sold for $54,145. The 1853 painting of the 15 year old “Empress Elisabeth of Austria” as a bride on horseback recently sold for $ 1,700,000 ; he painted only the horse in the painting. He is buried beside his two brothers and father.
