Oldest child of Tollev Hansen and Marte Marie Tommerhoel Bjorntad. He grew up on the family farm (Greater Bjornstad Farm, located on the main road between the towns of Gjovik and Kapp, near the west side of Lake Mjosa) and took over the farming operation in 1874. He married Marie Braastad, the daughter of Kristian and Karen Pedersdatter Hallingstad Braastad on 27 October 1873. There were six sons born to this union: Torleiv (born 14 September 1874), Kristian (born 30 July 1877), Per (born 21 December 1879), Aksel (born 19 December 1881), Mauritz (born 26 May 1884), and Casper (born September 19, 1886). He died from appendicitis and the farm operation passed on to his oldest son, Torleiv. His sons Kristian and Mauritz emigrated to the United States in the early 1900s, eventually settling near Grand Forks, North Dakota.
