QUEENSBURY -- Edward Frederick Whiting Sr. passed away at Glens Falls Hospital on Feb. 12, 2012, after a brief illness. He goes to be united with his loving mother and father, and his dear son in everlasting peace.

He was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Glens Falls. He was the son of the late Fredrick and Florence (Corlew) Whiting.

Ed grew up in Glens Falls and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served in World War II as a gunner's mate.

Edward married Ruth Hurd in January 1948. He and Ruth had two children, Edward Jr. and Kathryn.

Ed loved three things in life: his loving wife; his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and building things. He worked as a stockman for 30 years at General Electric in Hudson Falls until his retirement. His second happiest love was of building, whether it be houses, birdhouses or just tinkering around in his shop in the cellar, were his most prized moments. He was always working on building a house or other construction job with his best friend, Bill Taylor (deceased). They built and renovated countless homes in Warren, Washington and Saratoga counties. Each one still stands as a testament to the quality of the craftsmanship that punctuated his life and work. He was also known for his sense of humor and he was a classic practical jokester. A victim of his practical jokes would never forget the story. He also enjoyed his John Deere tractor, and cherished every minute on it and looked forward to mowing the lawn in the summer, and plowing in the winter.

He was predeceased by his son, Edward F. Whiting Jr., his two brothers, Raymond and Richard, his sisters, Mary Meyers, Joyce Smith, Betty Cook, Carol Whiting, Agnes Baker and Doris Ballard.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Hurd) Whiting; his daughter, Kathryn Hammond and her husband, Tom, of Queensbury; his grandchildren, Tammy Murphy of Glens Falls, Tricia Suddard and her husband, John, of Fort Edward, Traci Brown of Fort Edward, and their mother, Linda Whiting; Jeremy and Janelle Hammond of Queensbury; and great-grandchildren Samantha Webster, Richard (R.J.) Webster, Morgan Suddard, Tristin Suddard and Benjamin Hammond; his brothers, Donnie Whiting and his wife, Mary, Fred Whiting and his wife, Virginia, Albert Whiting and his wife, Goldie, and sisters Della Palmer and Eleanor Ellis. He also has countless nieces and nephews, and all the children to whom he was a surrogate grandfather.

A memorial service will be held at West Glens Falls Community Chapel, 55 Main St. in Queensbury. Friends and family are welcome to share their memories. The church will be open at 1 p.m. so friends and family can celebrate his life in photos and stories. At 2 p.m., a memorial service will be held. After services, light refreshments will be served downstairs in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern New York - 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205, is requested, as Ruth, his wife, battles the disease.

Arrangements are under Regan and Denny Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent through www.sbfuneralhome.com.
